jono frew
Hi there!
My name is Jono Frew and I am passionate about regenerating natural cycles in our farming systems, empowering people of all walks of life, Education and Communication.
I grew up in a small town of Duntroon, in the beautiful Waitaki Valley.
I spent my childhood surrounded by agricultural chemicals (my family are sheep dipping and agricultural spraying contractors).
I have farmed for over 18 years mainly in high production dairy, and I have also spent time working on arable sheep and beef farms.
I spent 3 years as a chemical agronomist and manager of a specialist agricultural spraying company before taking a job managing a large organic sheep beef and mixed cropping farm.
During the first 2 years managing this operation and learning to farm without chemicals, I realised that I had spent my entire life running around madly treating symptoms with not even a single thought of why?;
Why are my pesticides and fertilisers not working as well as they used to?
Why are my animal health costs only ever increasing?
Why am I just doing more and more of the same thing?
Why are things becoming so complicated and hard to understand?
Why am I so depressed and resigned?
This is when I realised I was in the middle of what I call the shift from: “Complicated Simplicity, to Simple Complexity”.
From a world of mono susceptibility to diversity resilience, from “clean” to CHAOS, from control to acceptance, from constant ambulances at the bottom of the cliff, to addressing root causes, from doing what everyone else is doing, to taking responsibility for the way I farm, and the way I live my life.
I sparked a fascination with soil, plant and animal health, diversity in all aspects, symbiosis between organisms, water, biology, hydrology, and ecology, Integrity, leadership, language, and communication.
I went about learning not just the what and the why, but the how?
How do I incorporate these ideas onto my farm and into my life?
After years of studying books, papers and podcasts, attending courses and discussion groups and of course plenty of Youtube I went about applying what I had been studying.
Through a lot of trial and error, wins and learnings (and plenty of unlearning), curiosity and discovery, I decided I would like to share my learning journey with others; I founded Quorum Sense in 2018 which started as a local discussion group focussing on soil health and biological - regenerative agriculture.
I also made the big call to finish up with my farm management role after the end of a marriage of 11 years and learning to live without my children with me every day and went about creating Natural Performance Ltd.
Very quickly I realised that there was a need for farmers to have access to higher diversity seed mixes. After spending a lot of time with Peter Barrett from Linnburn Station, Peter and I created Symbiosis Ag Ltd, a diverse species seed company specialising in creating and providing custom high diversity seed mixes and cover crops. Symbiosis is now recognised as the leading high diversity seed mix provider in New Zealand, with over 15,000 hectares of seed mixes planted all over NZ and still growing!
And, after 4 years in business, I am thrilled to say Natural Performance LTD is only growing in ways I could have never imagined. With Jake and Greer joining the team, NPL continues to make a huge difference for individuals, families, businesses, and communities in the agricultural sector, not only in New Zealand but around the world.
Today I am a father to 2 incredible children, Harper and Beau Frew and 1 black labrador, Keith.
I am a personal and professional coach and regenerative farming consultant, an agroecologist, a facilitator, a public speaker, a systems thinker, a writer, a classic car enthusiast, an outdoorsman, a student, a Jack of all trades and a master of none.
I am a farmer's husband to be, engaged to be married to the love of my life, Ruby.
I am extremely excited by the enormous opportunity that my life is, to make a difference in the world.
I am clear that who I am is the possibility of a world that works, aligned with nature. My life will be fully used up to fulfil this possibility.
